How do I submit secondary claims?

Submitting a secondary claim in Luminello is possible with just a few simple steps. Read on to learn how:

Note: While submitting a secondary claim cannot be fully automated due to the nature of the information required by insurance companies in these claims, we've done everything we can to make it more efficient for you. This includes automatically moving secondary payer info to the primary payer area if you have already entered it.  Therefore, please double-check to make sure this info is entered in fields 11d, and 9a/9d, before starting.

1. After submitting a claim to the primary insurance, wait to be paid and receive an EOB (ERA if you get your EOB's electronically).

2. Once you have received an EOB or ERA, you can submit the claim to the secondary payer:

a. In Charts>Billing>Transactions, click on the drop-down menu on the right-hand side of the billing transaction that you would like to submit and click on "Submit secondary claim".

b. If you have filled out item ''11b'' in the ''Insurance Info'' section within this patient's chart, the secondary payer, ID number, and the patient's first and last name will be automatically populated.

c. Item ''19'' will be automatically filled out with ''SECONDARYCLAIM''. Please make sure to remove this the next time a claim is submitted.

3. Ensure that all the required information is entered before clicking on ''Submit Claim''.

4. Once submitted, you must access your ApexEDI OneTouch portal and enter the primary claim adjudication date and payment amount for each CPT code in item ''24''. For reference, please follow these secondary claim submission instructions (provided by ApexEDI) to complete this process.

Note: ApexEDI offers a Secondary Claims Tool; however, it is not automated. The tool takes clients through the step-by-step process of creating a secondary claim. There is an $8.00/month fee. Please contact [email protected] if you would like to add this feature to your account.

Please keep the following in mind:

  • Secondary insurance information is not required to submit the primary claim. If you submit a secondary claim but don't have the group # handy, it won't be rejected. (As there is no place to store this info on the HCFA-1500, we wanted to let you know not to worry!).
