Tell me more about PDMP

Most clinicians are now required to access their state’s Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) before prescribing a scheduled drug.

Learn about how to set this up in Luminello and the associated fees.

Note: while PDMP is highly useful, there is not a 100% success rate with PDMP checking.  Learn more here.

Why is PDMP Important?

PDMP is of the most impactful tools available addressing prescription opioid misuse and abuse and are part of the larger Electronic Prescribing of Controlled Substances (EPCS) programs. These are the key features of PDMP:

Comply with PDMP Regulation: in some states (Please see new Illinois mandate), prescribers will be required to check the state’s Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) before writing prescriptions for controlled substances. PDMP collects and securely stores data on dispensed drugs that contain controlled substances.

Better Medication History Visibility: Complete and accurate medication history data better arms the prescriber to make informed decisions.

Increase Patient Safety: By having automated clinical allergy, drug interaction and condition alerts, you minimize the risk of causing an adverse drug event.

Reduce Patient Opioid Addiction Risk: By having the information at your fingertips you can spot patients/clients who are at risk for opioid addiction and take appropriate steps to support them.

Support Medication Adherence: Studies show that electronic prescriptions result in a 10 percent increase in prescription pickups at the pharmacy.

States that require PDMP

Many states require a PDMP database check before sending a controlled substance - see them here

Note: Starting January 1, 2022, the state of Illinois will require EMRs with facilities in the state to have an integrated PDMP solution.
